Design Analysis and Reflection

Project Outcomes

In regard to task one, specifically regarding motion design fundamentals I incorporated both primary (object) and secondary (camera) motion design within my work however primarily utilised secondary motion to move between illustrations rather than primary. while I believe this made the overall outcome appear more smooth, in retrospect, I believe challenging this may have made the final work more visually interesting. I chose to have the salient illustrations being the focal point of motion in nearly all frames, this I believe worked well given the aesthetics of the source material however appeared quite repetitive. Where I think I can strongly improve is my temporal considerations, these I struggled with especially in regard to the secondary motion and legibility of type, as they either felt too fast or too slow, however I believe that the music helped alleviate how pronounced this was. I am overall happy with the illustrations I produced; I feel as though the use of flat colour and more simple illustration fit with the aesthetic in which I was trying to achieve although if they were slightly more detailed the final design would appear more polished. Concerning technical achievement, I tried to utilise a variety of different After Effects techniques, some of which I later disregarded as to focus on what I would be able to best execute.

Learning Opportunities

Three critical moments within the design of my project engage with areas of illustration and motion. In regard to illustration what in turn became a critical moment was the narrowing down of my initial story board. In doing so this made my goals for the final project far more feasible, as to not overcomplicate the work. Along with this, deciding to work with a select colour pallet and flat colour design helped in both achievable aesthetic choices and developing a clear visual language. Concerning motion exploring more secondary motion allowed me to incorporate smother transitions between frames as I found experimenting with object motion made the work appear less polished.

Future

Having completed this project I feel as though there are many ways in which I can carry forward the skills I have learned into future projects. In the final frame of the work, I incorporated the hand drawn type as seen In the Grand Budapest hotel (2014), hand drawn type being something I would love to explore in further design works. With a working understanding of Adobe Illustrator, I would also like to further explore this in connection to my visual arts practice, adapting physically made media into short video form. Along with this I feel as though I now have the skills to help me edit videos whilst incorporating visual design elements that could help me showcase my work. In regard to the skills I have learnt through this progress I believe they are able to help in many aspects of both my design and artmaking practice.
