My second project for VCD302 presents a series of three posters, advertising a proposed art exhibition at the contemporary art gallery. The posters take on the role of event branding, Highlighting the title of the exhibition ‘Art in the post digital’ alongside the date and time of the event. The posters take on the theme of a contemporary glitch aesthetic in line with the proposed event. This aesthetic characterised as “‘mess that is a moment” when systems break or falter and disgorge themselves. Glitch Art capitalizes on, captures, and instigates these messy media moments, producing what has been described as "the only true aesthetic of software’ ". (Jones, NJ 2016)
The predominant area of exploration regarding motion design within project 2 relates back to kinetic type. While there remains movement in the backdrops of each of the posters, those of which take on different colours but remain aesthetically in line with one another, each poster will share the focal type, that being the name of the exhibition, alongside the gallery and date in which will behave with that of the glitch design. Whilst there is a heavy amount of movement in relation to the graphic elements outside of type, the methods by which I will be manipulating these designs will draw directly from the effects I have previously utilised within project one. Those of which relate to rapidly changing positioning, scale, and opacity. Whereas the methods for which involve making the type behave how I would like it, I have not fully explored yet.
The production techniques I have chosen to use within in this project remain like those used within project 1 however are delineated by way of type as aforementioned. For the background, I will be making colourful, pixel-like backdrops using adobe illustrator, with each layer relating back to a different colour. By way of type, I will be using Helvetica bold, that of which will be warped according to my initial thumbnails, this done using After effects for which I am still experimenting with how to best glitch the design in accordance with what I have envisioned. I am intending the text to remain recognisable in its basic form however the type will be stretched and appear at different heights in line with the outlined storyboard.
The aesthetic direction for which I am wanting to incorporate within this project is that of a contemporary digital aesthetic, that of which can be characterised by glitch imagery, early 00’s to current renderings of digital memorabilia and all things technology. Regarding visual research the website themovingposter.com has provided a great point of reference for design examples. As shown below, the works for which have proved very helpful in understanding the direction in which I want this work to take are those of Claudia Basel, Johnson/Kingston, Tania Prill, Anna Haas, Herendi Artemisio, Niklaus Troxler, and M Josh Schaub, as well as Erich Brechbühl and DIA studio.
Below are my current story boards, whilst I am overall happy with my concept and designs, I would like to make some changes to the colour pallet, however I am looking to resolve this whilst working in illustrator rather than creating new storyboards as I feel as though I have resolved my designs.
